Lassonde Buildings, École Polytechnique de Montréal

This project, divided in two buildings linked by a 15 meter-wide atrium, is located on a steep slope North of the École Polytechnique's main building. While remaining within the limits imposed by the City's zoning master plan, its rather massive volume emphasizes horizontal lines, reminiscent of the geological strata of the rocky outcrop it is built on.  Rather than imitating its style of the adjacent University of Montreal Ernest Cormier Building, the new building's bold contrasting horizontality also reinforces its neighbour's strong vertical lines.  Various functions and departments are distributed on the 9 levels of the 2 buildings forming the complex :  the lower levels accommodate 26 modern classrooms ; the intermediary levels receive the electrical and mechanical engineering department spaces ;  the École's library occupies the upper level, with access to a terraced green roof. 
The building was designed to the Gold LEED standard and was the first University building of its type and scope to be so certified by the USGBC in Canada.
