PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Built in 1951, the Supreme Court of Canada building, conceived by the well known architect Ernest Cormier, was recognized in 1988 by the Federal Heritage Building Review Office (FHBRO) as a "Federal Heritage Building". In the late 1980's Public Works and Government Services Canada (PWGSC), owner of the building, recognizing some of the building's increasingly inadequate technical and functional features resolved to undertake major rehabilitation, upgrade and fit-up work. The programme included fire and life safety upgrades, the reconstruction of copper roofs, the implementation of barrier-free access to the entire building and, most prominently, the reorganization and the Supreme Court Library and its research services, to enhance functionality and ensure the preservation of Canada's most important civil and common law collections
